On Feb. 4, two local heroes were recognized for their bravery by the Government of Quebec. Jake Gravelle and Derek McColgan were honoured at the Tribute to Good Citizenship Ceremony at the Legislative Council Chamber of Parliament in Quebec City. They were recipients of the Honourable Citation for Good Citizenship following an incident in June of 2017 where the two displayed acts of courage under difficult circumstances. While heading to their hunt camp on that fateful day, Jake and Derek were involved in a head-on collision with another vehicle that veered into their path.
Both vehicles were carrying propane tanks that caught fire, adding an extra element of danger to the situation. Despite both being injured themselves, Jake and Derek were able to pull the driver from the other vehicle and they attempted to save the driver’s father who was trapped in the vehicle. Sadly, they were unable to reach him as the truck became engulfed in flames. They were out of range to contact emergency services due to their location but an ATV had been thrown from their vehicle so Jake took it to get help while Derek stayed with the driver of the other vehicle. It took over three hours for emergency services to arrive on scene. They both recovered from their injuries. It was a heroic effort that saw them save one life that day. Congratulations to Jake Gravelle and Derek McColgan for being recognized for their bravery by the Government of Quebec, a well-deserved honour. We are all so proud of them.
Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Joe Daley who passed away on Feb. 3. Our prayers are with you at this sad time.
Condolences are also going out to the Murdock family, as Don Murdock passed away on Feb. 7 following a courageous battle with cancer. Don and his wife Louise were my neighbours for several years as they lived across the street from me before moving to Shawville and he was always so kind, friendly and helpful. Thoughts are with his family and friends as they celebrate his life.
Happy 60th birthday to Cecile Dumont who celebrates today. Birthday wishes are also going out to Winston Kinnaird and Kira Stanley on Feb. 13 and to Brian Young on Feb. 14.
Thursday is your chance to show the love to all of the important people in your life. Happy Valentine’s Day to all.
