I hope everyone survived the January thaw this past weekend. The mild temperatures brought an . . .

unpleasant mix of rain, freezing rain, ice pellets and snow. It was a perfect weekend to stay hibernating indoors and I was lucky I had no need to go outside. Now my fingers are crossed that we get some snow as I’m itching to get out snowshoeing.

I mistakenly omitted a few congratulations messages from my column last week. Best wishes to Katie Dolan and Ben Younge who got engaged over the holidays. Have fun as you plan for your big day.

Congratulations also to Tyler and Fanie Helmer as they welcomed the New Year’s baby in the Outaouais for 2020. Their baby girl Lexi-Anne was born in Gatineau, Que. making headlines in our area as the first baby born of the New Year. Best wishes to the family as they settle in with their little girl.

Happy birthday to Julia Bernier and Sharon Young, both on Jan. 16. We also have birthday wishes going out to all of the gang born on Jan. 17: Christopher Provost, Vikki Stanley, Joanne McMurray, Meagan McCann, Tracey McColgan, and Don Desabrais. Happy birthday to Ryan Nugent on Jan. 18, to Katrine-Anne Villeneuve on Jan. 19 and to Kristen Stanley on Jan. 21. Best wishes to everyone celebrating this week.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Marguerite Gibbons as she passed away on Jan. 4 at the age of 103. She will be missed by the Tracey, O’Hara and Pittman families as she was an aunt and second mother to them.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mary Brouse who passed away on Jan. 12 at the age of 98. Mary’s granddaughter, Stacy Johnston, is my oldest friend so I have known Nanny Brouse my whole life. She was a strong, determined woman and I always enjoyed chatting with her. Sympathy is extended to her husband Bob and all of Mary’s loved ones at this sad time.
