The Quyon Legion hosted a Texas Hold ‘Em Poker Tournament this past Saturday. The tournament was held in memory of . . .

Cal Johnston who organized many poker tournaments and other fundraising events for the Legion over the years. There was a great turnout of players and everyone had a great time. The big winners were Bob Villon in first place, Denis Paradis in second and Chico Fortin in third. Kudos to all involved in organizing this event in Cal’s honour.

The Quyon Family Centre held their annual Harvest Supper on Saturday evening, with a great crowd gathering to enjoy a delicious spaghetti dinner. There were also prizes up for grabs donated by local businesses and folks in the community. All proceeds from the dinner will go to the Snowsuit Fund to help to properly clothe local children for winter. Well done to all involved.

On Sunday morning, the Quyon Pastoral Charge bid farewell to Éric Hébert-Daly, who has been the student minister here for the past two and a half years. It was a bittersweet occasion as Éric has been so well liked and appreciated in the community and has done an amazing job here as our minister. The service was very touching and emotional and Wesley Church in Beechgrove was full for his last Sunday. The service was followed by a potluck lunch of celebration in the church basement. Our church family and the greater community are so thankful to Éric for his leadership, care and compassion over the past few years. We all wish him well in the next step of his journey. He will be going to work full time at General Council for the United Church of Canada, further developing francophone ministry on a national level.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the family of Diane Deschamps as she passed away last week after a battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with her loved ones at this sad time.

I recently learned of the passing of Clifford Long on Sept. 13 at the age of 75 in Lindsay, Ont. Some locals may remember Clifford and his brother Phil as they lived in Quyon when their father was the minister for Quyon United Church back in the early 1950s. Our condolences to his family.

I would also like to offer our sympathy to my uncle Eric Draper and his family on the passing of his mother Jacqueline “Jackie” Chretien Draper Young. Jackie passed away on Sept. 26 at the age of 92. We will be keeping her loved ones in our prayers.

Happy 50th birthday to Charlene Aubertin as she celebrates today. We also have birthday wishes going out to Shelly Campbell on Oct. 2, to Sharon Hobbs on Oct. 3 and to Joan Foran on Oct. 4. Best wishes to everyone celebrating this week.

Now that October is here it means the Quyon Lionettes Car Rally is just around the corner. This year’s theme is “Where in the world are we?” Be sure to contact Donna Provost at 819-458-2655 or Hollie Leach at 819-210-0588 to book your times. I am looking forward to it.
