I hope all of the wonderful dads out there had a great Father’s Day. After a rainy day on Saturday, the weather cleared up a bit and it was a much nicer day on Sunday for Father’s Day festivities.

Last Thursday night was an exciting one across our country as the Toronto Raptors won their first NBA Championship. I had jumped on the bandwagon a few weeks ago, and I was thrilled with the game six win.

I never would have thought there would come a day that I would be more interested in the NBA finals than the Stanley Cup finals and yet, that’s exactly what happened. They turned me into a basketball fan. Way to go Raptors!

Deepest sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Paul Albert of Beechgrove who passed away on June 13 after a very short but courageous battle with cancer.

Two local couples celebrated their upcoming nuptials this past weekend as their friends and families held Stag and Doe parties in their honour. On Friday evening, a Stag and Doe was held at the Renfrew Legion in honour of Morgan Welburn and Philip Sweezey. Morgan’s dad, Denny Welburn and his band Good Time Heart entertained the crowd and everyone had a great time. Best wishes to Morgan and Phil.

On Saturday evening, Gavan’s Hotel was the place to be as a Stag and Doe was held there for Morgan Scully and Brandon Fenton. The father of the bride-to-be, David Scully was the deejay for the evening and there were prizes and lots of fun for everyone. Wishing Morgan and Brandon all the best as they prepare for the wedding coming up in August.

Happy birthday to Molly Dowe as she celebrates her eighth birthday on June 19. I’d like to send out big birthday wishes to my niece, Neve Young who is turning seven on June 21 as well as my cousin Ryla Platt who is turning eight on the same day. Happy birthday to Randy Labadie also on June 21. Best wishes to everyone celebrating this week.

Local artist Emily McCann is holding an exhibition at the Stone School Gallery in Portage-du-Fort. From June 21 through to July 21, Emily’s art will be on display on the lower level while fellow artist Sheila McGregor will be displayed on the upper level. Join them Friday evening for the opening night of their exhibition.

The community spirit in Quyon is flowing once again as several folks around town have volunteered to buy, plant and care for the flowers in the planters throughout the village. Big thanks to Donna Kennedy for initiating and organizing this endeavour. I’m not known for my green thumb, so I’m hoping my mom helps me keep my flowers alive this summer.
