Last Thursday evening, I took the time to go to Campbell’s Bay to hear promises and reasoning of the federal Pontiac riding . . .

candidates, at an event organized by the Pontiac Chamber of Commerce. To be sure I was impressed by the performance of Denise Giroux, representing the NDP. She distinguished herself from the incumbent Amos and the Conservative Blackburn.

What I was not impressed with was the utter lack of interest shown in this event, as there were no civic leaders (mayors) and few Chamber of Commerce members.

One can only surmise that minds have been made up, without even hearing the candidates present themselves. Or, more disappointingly, has apathy set in to the extent that people do not bother to participate, having no interest in what our politicians have to say on the important matters relevant to the Pontiac?

And then we cry in dismay about our stagnant Pontiac economy. This sets the table for robotic voting, people casting ballots oblivious to what promises are said in their name.

It’s no use crying after the vote. It will be too late to lament the half-measures and broken promises candidates are responsible for. Demanding more from our elected officials helps get better government. Pontiacers have now missed one important opportunity to hear, question and participate directly with their would-be MP.
