The children were so excited for the opening of the Litchfield splash pad that they could hardly wait for the ribbon to be cut before they were frolicking in the water.
Members of the Litchfield Leisure Committee, along with Mayor Colleen Larivière, cut the ribbon for the new splash pad at the Litchfield Halte on Sunday afternoon. The committee has been fundraising for the project since February of this year.

Young families in the Pontiac will have a new destination on hot summer days as the grand opening of the Litchfield splash pad was held Sunday afternoon.
The project was initially brought forward to council in February by the Litchfield Leisure Committee, made up of Kristin Morin, Courtney Harris, Adele Denault and Jenna Pilon. The municipality agreed to purchase the equipment for the project if the committee fundraised the remaining $15,000 for labour and installation.

Morin explained that the idea came out of frustration from the lack of amenities in the vicinity and the group of friends decided to band together and revitalize the Litchfield Halte.
“It is a small town but there are tonnes of young families with small kids,” she said. “It’s nice to have somewhere to bring them.”
The committee held a series of fundraisers throughout the year, including a euchre tournament, barbeque and even a concert at the municipal garage.
Morin explained that they had a lot of support from local residents and businesses, as well as council members and family.
“Every single donation means the world to us, that’s what made this happen,” she said. “Everyone that came to our events and supported us, we’re so thankful.”
Just before the committee members cut the ribbon alongside Litchfield Mayor Colleen Larivière, they were presented with a cheque for $5,000 from Stéphane Labine, president of Caisse populaire Desjardins in Fort Coulonge.
Morin added that the committee still has a significant amount of money left over that they are looking to invest into further amenities for the Halte like a play structure and a sandbox. There were also around 15 benches that have been purchased by donors.
“Over the winter we’re going to try and get them built and then install them in the spring,” she said.
Larivière was thrilled with the committee’s gumption as well as the commitment from their families and other community members.
“It’s always nice to see young people getting involved,” she said. “They put a lot of work into it.”
The ribbon was scarcely cut before the youngsters in the crowd were splashing away with gusto, much to everyone’s delight.
