Thank you for explaining

Dear Editor,

Thank you for your editorial on page 4 (Feb.8, 2023). Thank you for explaining again the pinch that the encroaching French-first language laws are bringing against bilingualism in Quebec.

Trusting that I may respond to your paragraph “Sounds good,”the Office of the PM advised me to share my concerns with Mr. Simon Jolin-Barrette, Minister of Justice of Quebec, Minister Responsible for Laicity and Parliamentary Reform and Minister Responsible for the French Language at 1200 route de l’elise, 5th Floor, Quebec (Quebec) G1V 4M1 and with the Honourable Ginette Petitpas Taylor, Minister of Official Languages. I wrote the letters to both these people and received no response. I wrote to our warden, our mayor, three MP’s, past and present, and 21 other people. I’ve been intentional in defending bilingualism in our freedom of speech in Quebec.

The increasingly toxic insistence on French-first in Quebec is prohibitive to many enterprises here. It is especially critical in our healthcare system because many highly qualified, deeply needed and willing workers are turned away.

Rev. Mary McDowell Wood, Shawville, Que.

It’s not right

Dear Editor,

I live on Ile du Grand Calumet, Que.

I would like to know why the service for Fibre internet was given to Xplore internet instead of Bell or Cogeco.

Xplore does not have a seniors discount. Bell and Cogeco does.

Access Communications, Bell, CCAP, Cogeco, Hay Communications, Mornington, Novus, Rogers, SaskTel, Shaw, Tbaytel, Telus, Vidéotron and Westman Communications are participating in the program.

I’m stuck with Xplore and they’re a ripoff. They won’t even bring the fibre cable to my house without me signing up with them.

They’re cheapest plan is Fibre 100 (100 mbps) starting at $74.99 a month with a one year contract.

Cogeco which is servicing the Quyon area has a plan UltraFibre 120 unlimited (120 mbps ) for $52.00 a month with a two year contract. Plus they have a seniors’ discount.

Bell, which is servicing Chapeau area has Gigabit Fibe 1.5 (1.5 gbps) for $60.00 a month with a two year contract plus they have a seniors’ discount.

This wasn’t well thought out when the service was given to Xplore. Now I’m still stuck with Xplore with higher prices and no seniors discount. Something should be done about this, it’s not right.

Kevin White, Ile du Grand Calumet, Que.
