Former mayor of Mansfield-et-Pontefract Kathleen Bélec passed away on the morning of Apr. 21 at the age of 72.
Bélec was a longtime councillor before serving as mayor from 2013-2017. She had extensive experience working with community organizations, serving as the director of non-profit organization Golden Peak in Fort-Coulonge and on the board of directors at TransporAction.
She served as mayor when the province’s transportation ministry announced that the municipality’s Félix-Gabriel-Marchard bridge was to be closed to the public on May 6, 2014. Under Bélec’s leadership, the municipality secured funding for significant work to the bridge, allowing it to re-open in December of 2021.
“There are no words to express how deeply our entire community is shaken by this loss. Despite the hardships
[ . . . ] she always remained attentive to the community, present and dedicated to supporting those in need,” reads a statement from the municipality.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on May 1 in St-Pierre Church, Fort-Coulonge, Quebec at 10:30 a.m., and will be followed by her interment at Ste-Kateri Cemetery.

Mme Bélec a longtemps siégé comme conseillère avant d’occuper le poste de mairesse de 2013 à 2017. Elle possédait une vaste expérience au sein d’organismes communautaires, notamment en tant que directrice de l’organisme à but non lucratif Golden Peak à Fort-Coulonge et au conseil d’administration de TransporAction.
Elle était mairesse lorsque le ministère des Transports du Québec a annoncé que le pont Félix-Gabriel-Marchard de la municipalité serait fermé au public le 6 mai 2014. Sous la direction de Mme Bélec, la municipalité a obtenu des fonds pour d’importants travaux sur le pont, ce qui a permis sa réouverture en décembre 2021.
« Il n’y a pas de mots pour exprimer à quel point toute notre communauté est ébranlée par cette perte. Malgré les difficultés
[ . . . ] elle est toujours restée attentive à la communauté, présente et dévouée à soutenir ceux qui en ont besoin », peut-on lire dans un communiqué de la municipalité.
Une messe funéraire sera célébrée le 1er mai, à l’église St-Pierre de Fort-Coulonge, au Québec, à 10 h 30, et sera suivie de son inhumation au cimetière Ste-Kateri.
