Upcoming graduates from the high school in Mansfield decided to fundraise for their end-of-year meal, by serving up volleyballs to cut costs for serving up their plates.
Students from école secondaire Sieur de Coulonge (ESSC) held their mixed volleyball tournament on Saturday, seeing 10 teams compete from the Pontiac, Ottawa Valley and up from the city, too.
“We have volleyball players up from the city and basically the whole valley,” said ESSC student and upcoming grad, Tyler La Salle.
The tournament itself proved quite popular – not only did they expand their team limits beyond what they had initially decided upon, but they had to stay hard on their cut-off point.
“We had [set up for] eight teams and included 10,” said La Salle. “But we couldn’t handle anymore than that, or else we’d be here till midnight.”
With teams playing all day, from 8 a.m. till after 4 p.m., the competition was fierce.
“It’s all real volleyball and they don’t take it lightly,” said La Salle. “The finals should be intense, too.”
In the end, Samantha Corriveau’s team emerged victorious, earning their entrance fees back.
Money raised from the entrance fees and snack shop run by the grads onsite will help pay for the annual graduates’ meal at the end of June. Fundraising efforts will continue with a dance for the grade 5 and 6 students, that the grads are organizing.
The grads weren’t alone in organizing the volleyball tournament, as they did receive some extra help from a member of the community.
“We had help from Stephanie Ladouceur, who helped organize the tournament,” said La Salle. “She’s an avid volleyball player so she knew how to put us in line.”
