THE EQUITY’s team won seven awards at the Quebec Community Newspapers Association’s annual Better Newspapers Competition, held on Friday at the Chateau Cartier in Gatineau.
The QCNA represents English-language newspapers across the province.
Reporter K.C. Jordan won first place for best sports story for his profile of Hunter Beauregard and Cade Kuehl (front page, July 30 edition). He also won the award for best arts and entertainment story, for his behind-the-scenes account of all that goes into building a car for the Shawville Fair demolition derby (page 7 of the Shawville Fair special section, Aug. 20 edition), as well as he best education story award for his profile of longtime local educator Donna Cahill (page 5, July 9 edition). Jordan placed second in the best feature story category for his profile of retired Waltham fire chief Larry Perry (page 5, Dec. 17 edition).
THE EQUITY’s design and photography wizard Dave Moore won best nature photo for his picture of a praying mantis (page four, September 10), and also won the competition’s best photo-journalism award.
THE EQUITY team won best editorial page (page four, Nov. 12 edition), as well as best community newspaper promotion for the See You in The Equity contest published in the Shawville Fair special section (Aug. 20 edition).
The team also won second place for best photo essay, for their Shawville Fair spread (page 10, Sept. 3 edition) and second place for best front page (Aug. 13 edition).
Editor Sophie Kuijper Dickson won second best feature photo for her snap of youngsters standing on a fence at the Shawville Fair (front page, Sept. 3 edition). She also placed third in the best feature story category for her piece on the late Sue Hamilton (page 5, Sept. 24 edition).
THE EQUITY’s 2025 summer reporter Emma McGrath took second place for best agriculture story for her story on the trade war’s impact on Pontiac’s dairy farmers (front page, July 9 edition).
