Around 300 people came out for a barbeque outside Joanne’s Valu-mart on Friday to raise money for two provincial minor hockey tournaments to be held at the Shawville Arena.
Rick Atkinson, who sits on the organizing committee for the tournaments, explained that they offer local players the chance to test their skills against teams from across Quebec.

“The [Pontiac Provincial] Atom-PeeWee [tournament], it’s been going on for two years now,” he said. “This year we’re going to try a Bantam and Midget tournament as well.”
He explained that the tournaments will run on back-to-back weekends this winter and feature 16 teams each. The money raised will go towards expenses like renting the ice, as well as paying referees and sanction fees.
A second barbeque will likely be held later in the summer.
Atkinson said the events wouldn’t be possible without all the volunteers that help out in addition to all the donations from local businesses.
