L’ÎLE DU GRAND CALUMET June 5, 2020

Families took to the roads of Île du Grand Calumet on Saturday to scour the sprawling region for clues, as part of a treasure hunt put on by a community organization . . .

The Group L’Île du Grand Calumet is a volunteer group that has been organizing community events on the island for some time. They focus on the history of the island and the restoration of various historical sites.

“We’re doing a fundraiser, the Group de L’ Île du Grand Calumet,” explained Vice President Jeanne McTiernan. “We promote ancestral roots and the historical part of L’ Île du Grand Calumet.”

She said that there were numerous tasks set up all across the island that would introduce participants to areas of the island that they might not be familiar with.

“We didn’t want it to be a race, we wanted it to be a family event, and with COVID well we wanted something that was as safe as possible,” she said. “So everyone goes into their cars … they have to figure out where their destination is, go there and there’s things to be done. There’s either things to pick up or there’s things that they have to figure out. We’re using Morse code, we’re using all kinds of different things so that they can get involved with the children, really it’s a family thing.”

The group’s next fundraiser will be a fishing derby scheduled for July.

The winners and their prizes of the scavenger were as follows:

1st place – “Les Pirates” $250

2nd place – “Treasure Island” $200
