What an amazing day it was in Quyon on Saturday! The weather was just perfect for Community Day, and there was a wonderful crowd out to enjoy the festivities. The musical entertainment kicked off at 1 p.m., and kept the crowd tapping their toes and singing along right through until late into the evening. Eddie McCann was the master of ceremonies for the day. Lorne Brady and friends started things off, and they were followed by Barry Teevens and friends, Cal Cummings, Lorne Daley, and the Saggy Bottom Boys. A delicious roast beef dinner was served by the Quyon Lions Club, with the hall packed with folks who came out to enjoy it. The evening entertainment included Arnold Trudeau and Larry Chevrier, Jessica Pearson, Valley Mountain, and then the house band, Chicken Fried, finished off the night. Meanwhile, the park was filled with children throughout the day as they had fun on the bouncy castles and making crafts. There were also a slew of fabulous prizes given out to lucky winners who bought tickets on the Wall of Wonderful, which were all donated by local businesses and individuals in our community. At dusk, the fireworks were set off down by the river, and the show, which was postponed on Canada Day due to weather, was well worth the wait. Hats off to the Quyon Community Association for all of their hard work in organizing the event, and to the Quyon Lions Club for serving the meal. It’s days like this that Quyon shows it truly is “Almost Heaven”!
Quyon Sports & Rec also hosted a 3-pitch ball tournament on the weekend, which drew a great crowd out to the ball diamonds in town. Congratulations to all who took part and to all who volunteered to help out with the tournament. I hear it was a great success.
Congratulations to the Quyon Jr. Flyers girls team that took part in the U15 Provincials in the Montreal area over the weekend. This team of local Pontiac girls was put together earlier this summer by Lynn Kearns, Nick Armitage, and Stephen Rusenstrom, and they have spent the summer practicing and playing in exhibition games to prepare for the Provincials. Rori Richardson joined the team for the weekend to help with coaching the girls, and they had an amazing weekend, ending up in 5th place in the province. Way to go girls!
Birthday wishes are going out to Bart Stanley and Josh Armitage, both on Sept. 19. We also have birthday wishes going out to Madeline Ostrom and her great-grandpa Bruce McKay, as they share their special day on the 20th. Happy Birthday to Enjolie Provost, Michel Provost, and Rob Fraser on the 20th, and to Charlotte Dowe on the 21st. Happy 2nd birthday to Hayden Wilkinson, as he celebrates on the 21st. Birthday wishes are going out to Emily Johnston and Tiffany Young, both on the 22nd. Best wishes to everyone marking special occasions this week.
This coming Saturday, Sept. 19, Gavan’s Hotel is continuing their 80th Anniversary celebrations by bringing together the people, music, and moments that made Gavan’s what it is today. The doors open at noon, and entertainment will feature Cal Cummings, Unwound, Buddy McCann, Denis Whitty, Wayne Rostad, Lorne Daley, Gail Gavan, Larry Chevrier, and many more. It promises to be an epic day celebrating the history of one of our town’s biggest landmarks. You won’t want to miss it.
Mark your calendars for the week of Sept. 21, as the Quyon Legion is hosting Event Week with a full schedule of activities all week long. Tuesday night will be Bingo, Wednesday is Appreciation Night featuring a free BBQ and music, followed by a Sports Challenge on Thursday, and a Washer Tournament on Friday.
