Local news: Mr. H. Imison, photographer, is still confined in the hospital at Ottawa in a very serious condition, so reports Mr. F.A. Parker, who called on him last Monday.
Sunday was the hottest day of the season so far as Shawville and vicinity were concerned. There was a stiff breeze during the greater part of the day, but it was like the breath of a furnace – a taste of the western chinooks — raising immense clouds of dust that made travelling very disagreeable.
Labor day — Monday— was observed in the literal sense of the term in Shawville. Save the bank, every other place of business was open, and the regular routine of trade and barter was rigidly adhered to. Had it been otherwise the number of farmers who came into town on that day would have been disappointed.
On Tuesday last a little daughter of M.G. Smith, of South Onslow, aged about three years, in the absence of its parents, managed to obtain access to a bottle of carbolic acid, the contents of which she proceeded to imbibe. Her mouth and throat were very seriously burnt, and for some time her condition was very precarious. Prompt medical attendance turned the scale in her favour, and we are glad to report that she is now out of immediate danger.
On Thursday evening last the Rev. H.A. Naylor was presented with the sum of $10.50, with which to purchase a camera, by a few of his Shawville friends and well wishers.
The idea, however, was set in motion, so to speak, by Mr. Austin Ireland, the popular student presently in charge of Portage du Fort parish, and in a very short time, with the assistance of some of the ladies, the necessary amount was made up by 50-cent subscriptions.
