The Way We Were:

Local News: It is said the wheat crop in this district is not turning out as well as indications warranted a few weeks ago.

The carpenters engaged on the grand new Pontiac House were temporarily laid off to give way to the plasterers, Messrs. Cole and W.J. Hayes, who are well advanced with that part of the work.

Miss Margaret Fraser, age 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Fraser, Pembroke, swam the Ottawa River a few days ago at a point where the river is a mile and a half wide. Leaving the Ontario shore at the Cedars, about 2:30 p.m., Miss Fraser reached the Quebec side an hour and twenty minutes later. This is considered one of the longest swims attempted by any girl in this locality.

As THE EQUITY is being issued this week, the 69th annual exhibition of Pontiac’s premier agricultural society is in full swing and the indications are that the event will be successful. The displays put on this year by the local merchants add greatly to the appearance of the main hall, while the various departments of the exhibition proper are pretty well filled.

Sunday was one of the hottest days of the year experienced here. THE EQUITY thermometer registered 87 in the shade.

G.A. Howard at “Elmhurst” and other farmers in the district engaged in stook-threshing last week and were favoured with the best of weather for the work.
