Belsher’s is still a favourite meeting spot: As the new Highway 8 in western Quebec cuts its way through farmland and bush, some of the towns and villages and other signs of habitation of the old road are lost to view.
John Belsher of Wyman realized he must continue to keep his service station in the public eye. Fortunately, the highway cuts through the bottom acre of his farm, only four hundred feet from his former location and last year he lost no time relocating his outlet near the new road.
John is well known in this part of the country. For nearly twenty years, the first BP station in the Pontiac area, and the accompanying Sportsman Café have been a favourite meeting place for hunters and fishermen. Other regular customers are the cottagers from nearby Norway Bay who find the delicious meals prepared by John’s wife Mary, a welcome holiday outing.
St Alphonsus High School graduation and awards: On Sunday, parents, clergy, teachers and friends of the graduates of St. Alphonsus High School gathered in the auditorium for graduation exercises and presentation of awards.
The program was introduced by Mr. Richard Schmaltz, the principal, who welcomed the guests and spoke of the significance of the occasion. Then each of the twenty-two students who were successful on the provincial examinations received a graduation diploma.
On behalf of the students, Miss Marilyn McGuire expressed in the words of the valedictory, gratitude for the past and hope for the future. Following this, prizes and awards were presented not only to the “top” students of the graduation class but also to the outstanding students in each of the grades.
