Local News: Saturday evening last, for the second time since electric lights were installed in Shawville, the village suffered the loss of its lighting plant by fire.
Saturday evening’s misfortune hits the town pretty heavily, as the land was municipally owned and is a complete loss.
Just what caused the fire is not exactly known but operator McCredie and H. Turner were in the front room of the building at the time, working around the auxiliary engines when they heard an explosion in the back room where the main engine was stationed. By the time help arrived in considerable number, the power house was a seething cauldron of flame and threatened the outbuildings of Mr. George Dale. With a drizzle of rain falling and the wind in a favourable quarter, the local fire brigade had luck on its side but the men had an exceedingly hot time in keeping the fire from spreading. The chemical engines also were used to good effect in subduing the flames.
A representative meeting of the ratepayers of both Clarendon and Shawville was held in one of the classrooms of the Academy on Wednesday evening last to consider and discuss the proposal of dissolving the existing school boards and erecting a new school corporation which would unite those thus dissolved in its jurisdiction.
Dr. J.W. Armstrong, Montreal, who has been enjoying a holiday abroad, expects to sail for home on H.M.S. “Corona” about the first of October.
