Arson suspected in Campbell’s Bay fires: Detective Paul Viau and the Campbell’s Bay Detachment, Quebec Police Force, are investigating possible arson in the fire last Thursday at midnight which totally destroyed a vacant house known as the Old Lawn Farm which is next to Pontiac Transit Mix and about a mile from the QPF headquarters in Campbell’s Bay. This building has been vacant for more than thirty years and in fact some residents used to refer to it as the “haunted house”. Arson is a distinct possibility, according to QPF, and in fact they feel confident that their investigation will uncover the culprits.

Committee to abolish Bill 22: The “language bill” in Quebec must go, according to the thousands of people who have been signing a petition which will be sent to both the Federal and Provincial governments next week. Radio Station CFCF in Montreal originated this particular petition and is collecting 25 cents per name to cover the cost of telegraphing the names to Ottawa and Quebec City. In Pontiac County the petitions are being handled by Dick Bowie, Mrs Eric Zimmerling, Wyman MacKechnie and Pontiac Printshop. The petition reads as follows: “We the undersigned Canadians in the Province of Quebec urgently demand that you use the power vested in you by the electorate to abolish Bill 22, and restore our fundamental rights as Canadians, to work and to educate our children in the language of our choice. We feel Bill 22 violates these rights and is in direct contravention of the federal government’s clear and emphatic official stand on bilingualism.”
