The Way We Were:

Major summer star in Norway Bay: The phone lines were humming with the news: a country music star is staying at a cottage in Norway Bay.

Someone said they saw the singer/songwriter with his wife and their two young sons at the beach. Others say they saw him one evening strumming his guitar on the porch of his rental cottage.

“I’m just a normal guy,” says Charlie Major, sipping on a cup of tea on the porch of his temporary home. The Majors are waiting to move into their new home in South March. After five years in Nashville, Major is returning to familiar territory; he and his wife, Jayne both grew up near Aylmer.

“Norway Bay is a real community, especially for the kids,” he says. “They take care of the kids here.”
Between finishing his fourth album, making a video and checking on the new home, the laid-back singer has made countless journeys out of Norway Bay in the past two months.

Charlie’s career has had many sunny days since he gained recognition for writing a song made famous by Rickey Van Shelton.

Quyon United Church celebrates 140 years: From listening to former NCC Chair Jean Pigott’s vision of improving Canadian history taught in our schools, to hearing about life as a minister of an inner-city church in Kingston, Jamaica, the congregation of Quyon United had a full slate of activities to celebrate their church’s 140th anniversary last weekend.

The weekend began with a home tour Saturday afternoon, featuring historical homes of Henry Vuori and Grace Mhor Vuori, Austin and Grace Trudeau, Ian and Debbie Hudson and Mae McCann, as well as the new home of Lester and Jean McCann and the Quyon United Church.

At Sunday’s anniversary service, the sermon was given by Rev. Dr. Anthony Bailey, son of Rev. Frank Bailey who served in Quyon from 1976 to 1981.
