Jr Pontiacs resort to fistfight with fans joining in: The Shawville Pontiac Jr. “C” Hockey club got off to a rough start Sunday with a home exhibition opener against the Ottawa Mustangs.
Faced with what is considered the best team in the league, the Pontiac Juniors were decidedly out-sized and outclassed. A fight early in the first period set the tone for the game and allowed the visitors to put in five easy goals. The frustration of trailing by four early in the third period was too much for the Shawville Juniors who tried to display their fighting skills. And both on and off the ice the locals fared rather grimly, as fans joined the battle from the sidelines and sticks began to fly. With the situation completely out of control, the officials called the game and left the ice.
The action resumes Friday night as the same two teams meet in yet another home exhibition game. By that time, the coaching staff of the Shawville Juniors will have trimmed the team in both numerical and psychological terms so as to convince the players that fighting will never be a substitute for solid hockey.
