Local news: This section experienced the first real snow storm of the season on Sunday. The day was easily the most unpleasant in the past 12 months.
Fire at Radford: On Wednesday afternoon last the dwelling house of Earl Horner, at Radford, was burned to the ground, but fortunately all the contents, even the vegetables in the cellar, were saved. The fire started in the attic, but burned slowly, and before it reached the ground, a band of willing workers from Shawville and the surrounding neighborhood were on hand to render what aid they could. There was no chance of saving the house after the fire was first noticed, and attention was therefore directed to saving the contents, and this was accomplished in a comparatively short time. The loss of his house at this season of the year is regrettable and all sympathize with Mr. and Mrs. Horner in their misfortune.
Local news: Local nimrods have been out on several early morning hunts since the deer season opened and have had more or less success. On Monday morning one party got a fine buck and a 2-year-old bear, the latter falling to the prowess of Trueman Tuck, who already is becoming known as “the man who killed the bear.” Another party, hunting in another locality a few miles out from town, missed their game but emptied their guns on a fine deer as it bounded gracefully and deliberately over a field 400 or 500 yards off, quite assured of its own safety at that distance.
