The Way We Were:

Local News: A prominent resident of Portage du Fort and former mayor for several terms, Walter Bennett, died at 75 years of age, on Sunday in Pontiac Community Hospital following a three-week illness. He was an uncle of hockey star Bill Cowley and Dr. Frank Cowley formerly of Shawville.

The United Y.P.U. had an enjoyable meeting with over 40 in attendance on Monday night. The program, in charge of the recreation committee took the form of five stunts, that were much enjoyed. The winning group led by Miss Mary McDowell won the prize of a box of chocolates with their shadow-graph “A successful operation.”

The semi-annual convention of the Women’s Institutes of Pontiac was held in St. Andrew’s United Church, Elmside on Tuesday. The members enjoyed a very fine address given by Mrs. Campbell, Director of Agriculture.
