Storm dumps hail onto Quyon: A short but severe storm dumped hail the size of moth balls over Quyon last week, leaving the town in a blanket of ice for about an hour in the early afternoon of Oct. 13.
“It was unbelievable,” said resident Tom Murdock, who hit the storm when he crossed Hwy. 148 onto Egan Street. “The roads and lawns were literally covered in ice. You were lucky if you could see 20 to 25 feet ahead of you,” he said.
The hail was coming down strong enough to crack the windshield of a UPS truck and fast enough that a town employee had to clear hail from the sewer grates. In one spot, Murdock measured the hail to be six inches deep.
The subsequent heavy rain quickly melted all the ice within a couple of hours. More than one resident could be seen scooping the hail up afterward to store in the freezer and use as evidence for those who missed it.
Young Farmers awards: It was trophy night Saturday as the Shawville Young Farmers held its annual awards banquet at the Ag Hall.
About 125 young and not-so-young farmers settled in for an evening of food, fun and first-place finishers.
Logan Drummond won the top junior aggregate and Ken Drummond won the top senior aggregate.
Dr. Grant Rodgers and the Upper Pontiac 4-H Club were given gifts in appreciation for their contributions to the Young Farmers.
Emcee Scott Judd regaled the audience with humourous quips between the numerous trophy presentations before pulling out his fiddle for square dance music before the evening ended.
