The Way We Were:

Local News: One of the amusement features at Campbell’s Bay Fair this year was a step-dancing contest in which there were 13 aspirants for the honour of capturing the prize. Among the bunch was the veteran shoe-maker, Richard Coughlin, who had the reputation of being one of the best tradesmen in the Ottawa Valley, in those bygone days when everybody sought the shoe-maker for their footwear. Now, after the lapse of half a century, we learn of Richard entering the lists at Campbell’s Bay and emerging with the palm of victory in his possession. Congratulations, Old-timer!

Shawville was well represented at the Arnprior Fair on Thursday and Friday and in consequence the Norway Bay ferry had a busy time of it.

By Royal Proclamation, the Governor General has designated next week, Oct. 5 to 11 to be observed by the citizens of Canada as “Fire Prevention Week” during which period it is recommended that fire drills be held for the children in all schools, as well as for the inmates of all institutions and for the employees in all large stores and factories in order that a greater degree of safety may be ensured by acquainting the occupants with the best and most expeditious mode of exit in time of danger.
