Hallowe’en in Quyon: The playing of Halloween pranks is one thing but the wanton destruction of property is quite something else. This fact was evident in the Quyon area last Friday night and early Sunday morning.
Some 320 rolls of snow fence stored in a municipal lot near Quyon station were destroyed by a gang of arsonists with perverted minds. The loss of this material with a replacement value of between $15,000 and $18,000 is no joke.
Farther west in the Wyman area a house on a farm owned by Ronald MacKechnie was set on fire about 2 o’clock Saturday morning. Old tires had been piled against the front door and gasoline poured over the steps. A passerby, Ernie Mulligan, roused neighbours who called the Quyon fire department who responded quickly. Nevertheless, due to fire and water damage the building can be considered a total loss. The house, a two-storey, six-room building, although vacant at the time, was occupied until a few months ago and was well equipped for occupancy.
In Quyon, a haystack owned by Ulysses Grant was burned and on the fairgrounds in Quyon the starter’s stand at the race track was destroyed. Besides serving its purpose at race time this stand was of historical value as well. It had been a wheelhouse off one of the river boats and had been donated to the Agricultural Society some years ago by the Upper Ottawa Improvement Company and served the purpose well.
Also on the fairgrounds a fire was set in one of the stables but luckily it was spotted by Nathan Bronson and his town crew and extinguished before extensive harm resulted.
The Campbell’s Bay detachment of the Q.P.P. is carrying on investigations into these serious affairs and we understand arrests are imminent.
Billy Horner killed in highway accident: The entire village of Shawville was shocked to hear that William Langford Horner was killed instantly in an accident near Tweed. Sterling Hobbs was also injured in the accident. They were driving home from Windsor when the accident occurred early Monday evening. Billy was in his 41st year, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Norris R. Horner of Shawville, the brother of Darryl of Cornwall and Marion, Mrs. Patrick McGahern of Ottawa. He is survived by his wife, the former June Dale, and a daughter, Judy.
