Local news: The Rev. F. A. Allen’s pictorial entertainment held in Elliott’s Hall on Wednesday evening last, under the auspices of the church workers association of St. Paul’s church, was favoured with a large attendance; considerably larger indeed than is usually accorded to similar entertainments in this place.
The first part of the program consisted of Mr. Allen’s deservedly famed lecture on the “Yellow Yukon”.
After a ten minutes intermission, during which coffee and cake, ice cream, etc. were available to those who desired refreshments, the latter or “local” part of the program was introduced. The likenesses of citizens as well as the views of buildings were presented in groups and ample time was given to inspect each plate, so that the period occupied in presenting the 641 pictures was not so long as many expected it would be.
James Humphries of Cobden, is about to install the acetylene gas system of lighting throughout his entire premises: house, store and hall. It will be difficult to discover another town in Ontario the size of Cobden, where so many of the residents light up their stores and dwellings with acetylene gas.
We are having a little snow now and then in Otter Lake and many wish it would come in good shape to make sleighing possible as the roads are rough at present.
The particulars of a fatal and mysterious shooting affair were related in Hull last Thursday by Mr. Joseph Cosineau, bailiff of Gatineau Point. On Monday of the previous week, it appears Paul Belaire of Masham was found lying in his hut shot through the chest.
It was at first thought that the unfortunate man had committed the deed himself but when he recovered consciousness and was questioned, he denied this, stating that he was shot by some unseen and unknown party while standing in his doorway. Dr. Stevenson, of Wakefield, was hastily summoned and probed for the bullet unsuccessfully.
The victim died on Saturday and was buried in Masham cemetery on Sunday. It is believed the shooting was done by some reckless hunter, and though it is not likely there was any evil intent, there is a strong feeling abroad that severe measures should be taken to prevent the recurrence of such accidents.
