The Way We Were:

Cedar shingle mill behind schedule: Initially set to begin production at the end of October, cedar shingles will now start rolling out for the new Clarendon factory sometime before the end of the year.
The final pieces of equipment are being tested, says mill manager Jean-Frederic Demers.

The five million dollar factory, owned jointly by Davidson Industries and Maibec, the largest white cedar shingle producer in North America; is a pilot project, the first cedar mill to use the latest in robotics technology, a process which requires fewer labourers but more high tech workers.

Testimonial boards recognize donors: When Donald Lavallee first heard of Dr. Tom O’Neill’s dream to bring a CT scan to Pontiac Community Hospital three years ago, Lavallee thought the anesthetist may have been sniffing, instead of administering gases.

But midway through its three-year campaign the CT scan project has reached 65 per cent of its goal.
To date, $453,000 has been donated. Lavallee, the chairman of the fund-raising campaign estimates the $700,000 goal will be reached by mid-summer.

“What’s interesting is that this is one of the poorest areas in Quebec,” said Dr. O’Neill, president of the PCH Foundation. “But people realize the need for a CT scan.”

On Monday, some of those donors were recognized when project organizers unveiled two testimonial boards in PCH’s waiting room.

The purpose of the boards is twofold, Dr. O’Neill stated, to acknowledge the support of individuals, organizations and businesses and to encourage others to contribute.
