The Way We Were:

Local news: Mr. Robert Barker, an old resident of Clarendon, died at Mr. Jas. Carson’s on Sunday last from paralysis. He was over 90 years of age.

Mr. Colin Campbell, of Rankin, and friends, while hunting in Leslie last week had the phenomenal luck to shoot a pure white deer.

Surveying parties are reported to be at work at the Culbute and Calumet channels of the Ottawa, to determine the route of the Ottawa canal. A short time ago they were working among the hills in Ross with the same object. Evidently the Government are to be furnished with abundant data to convince it that the project is practicable.

From a Sheen correspondent, whose communication we reserve for next issue, we learn that the most unscrupulous and corrupt tactics were used to capture the vote for Mr. Murray in that locality. Money was one of the most potent factors used to secure this end—in many cases in a most bare faced manner. The story is the same from all parts of the county, so that Mr. Brabazon’s friends have abundant material at hand to upset the election, and they are seriously thinking of taking steps to do so. In the present election it is certain the same dishonorable means will be used without restraint. It will therefore be the duty of Mr. Brabazon’s friends to keep a diligent eye on individuals who are going about the county with dice loaded to entrap the indifferent and unwary voter. Fair play and an unbiased, unfairly-influenced verdict is all Mr. Brabazon’s friends seek for, and if they don’t get it, investigation will follow.

The Bryson Advocate says it is not true that Mr. Otto Thrun, of Aldfield, offered a number of German voters to the Liberals at the rate of $1.75 per head. Just so. As we heard the story the price asked was $2.75. Whether the rumour was false or otherwise, however, one thing is certain, the goods were not delivered.
