The farmers of Pontiac County stage tractor parade to draw attention to beef impasse: The president of the Pontiac Branch of the APU, Bill Smiley, having received the word from his central command that Pontiac should hold a demonstration to express support of demands being made on the Minister of Agriculture, notified his members and the parade was planned.
The demonstration was ably covered by daily papers, radio stations, including CKOB Renfrew television and THE EQUITY. Quebec Provincial Police formed an escort for the tractors in cooperation with the farmers. From Vinton and from Quyon they came on their tractors and in their farm vehicles to meet in Shawville.
Tired of working one hundred hour weeks for nothing was one way of summing up the complaints of beef farmers in Pontiac County. Joining with other farmers from right across Quebec, the Pontiac branch of the Quebec farmers’ union APU, took part in a parade of their own on Thursday.
It was a clean and orderly demonstration, only intending to bring home to everyone possible that the beef farmers’ lot is not an easy one these days with costs rising at a greater rate than returns on their product.
Service at the Shawville Veterans’ Memorial: The annual Remembrance Day service was held at the Shawville Cenotaph on Nov. 11 at 11 A.M.
The Rev. Harland Worden, Pastor of the Wesleyan Church read the scripture lesson. Archdeacon M.K. Roberts of St. Paul’s Anglican Church offered the prayers of remembrance and recited the well known and much loved poem by John McRae entitled, “In Flander’s Fields”.
Mr. Ernest Dean was then called upon to read the names of those killed in action.
His Worship, Mayor Orla Young placed a wreath representing the Village of Shawville and thus began the procession of laying the wreaths of remembrance.
Rev. A.J. Macintosh conducted the service and expressed appreciation to all who had come to participate. He especially welcomed the Quyon Branch of the Canadian Legion and also paid tribute to the fine representation on the part of the young people and their leaders representing local organizations.
