Local news: A new bell for St. Stephen’s church, Thorne west, arrived here last week.
The Church Workers’ social on Wednesday evening was favoured with most delightful weather and a rather enjoyable time was had by those who attended.
Empire Day was duly celebrated by the pupiils of No. 9, Elmside, by a nice gathering in the school room in the afternoon. Patriotic speeches were given by several of the visitors. Master Collins Young, as one of the pupils, entertained the visitors by a speech on “Our Flag.”
Others gave essays on Canada, all of a patriotic nature.
The eclipse of the sun on Monday morning, which under favourable circumstances, would have been partially visible here, couldn’t be seen at all owing to the cloudy condition of the atmosphere.
Shawville was practically deserted on the Queen’s birthday. There being no day celebration to keep our citizens at home, they betook themselves to various points where there was something going on. One or two parties sought the magnificent scenery of the Grand Calumet Falls where report says there was a large gathering of young people hailing from different parts of the county.
Others took advantage of the cheap fare to visit the capital.
The Queen’s birthday was celebrated in Bristol by quite a gathering at Norway Bay.
Mr. Arch. McFarlane, the popular ferryman, invited all those gathered there to a free trip over to Sand Point.
Some new buildings are already going up at this very pleasant summer resort, Norway Bay. A great number of campers are expected this summer.
John Whitehead of Sand Point has, by the death of an uncle in Liverpool, fallen heir to a legacy of fifteen hundred pounds. He will take passage for England in a short time, as his presence is necessary in closing up the estate.
