The Way We Were:

Local news: Travelling on the country roads in this section improved considerably with the dry weather of the past week, and several “bad holes” that were the bane of the motorist, were looked after by the authorities.

A fire at Otter Lake in the early hours of Tuesday morning last destroyed the dwelling house and store of Mrs. John Moodie, which some years ago was familiarly known to travellers as “the Murphy House.” The fire had made such headway before it was noticed that very little of the contents were saved. The loss is complete, as it is stated Mrs. Moodie carried no insurance, but that the previous occupant, Mr. Storie, from whom the property was re-possessed, held a considerable amount of insurance.

At a fairly well attended meeting of the young men of town, held in the Bank of Montreal on Monday evening of last week, a Tennis Club was organized with Mr. Hugh Grace, as president; Mr. Geo. Steadman, vice-president and Mr. Reilly Hodgins as Secretary. Miss Irene Shaw was chosen as head of the lady members.

A double court is being put into shape in the Exhibition Park, and within a short time will be ready for play.

Any of the above mentioned officers will be pleased to receive the names of citizens who wish to become members, and will gladly furnish information as to fees, club rules and equipment.

The ladies’ rest room conducted during the Winter months by the Women’s Institutes of this section, is expected to re-open this week in the rooms over Mrs. Chamberlain’s Millinery Shop. We understand that the desire of the promoters of this very worthy institution is to make it more of a community nature by having the co-operation of the other ladies’ societies—in fact, that all should take an interest in its success so that its equipment may eventually include a collection of current literature, books, papers, etc.
