Local news: The weather of last week was unusually cold for the season and rather injurious to early vegetation.
There was a burglary in Otter Lake on Monday. The building occupied by McGinn and Abbott was broken into at one o’clock in the morning. Mr. P.J. Mason, who runs the business, sleeps at the depot a few yards from his store was reading.
Minutes after putting out his light, he thought he heard glass breaking. He got up and went outside only party dressed and perceived a dim light in his store. He found a man busy striking matches and choosing out goods for himself. Jim Mason, although not being a big man, is made of stuff which heroes are composed, ran in and closed the door and at once the burglar sprang upon him with an open knife and inflicted several deep cuts on both of Mason’s arms. There were some sword bayonets in the store and Mr. Mason ran to get one of these but the villain was ahead of him and seizing one aimed a blow at Mason’s head but the ceiling of the building being low, the bayonet struck a beam first before descending on Mason’s head. The burglar then got away outside and as he was going over the fence, Mr. Mason fired a few rifle shots after him to scare him.
As Mr. Mason has only lately come here, he does not know everyone and he did not recognize the party. However, he will know him again if ever he sees him.
