Language police check Valu-mart: The language police from the Office de la langue français (OLF) recently came to Shawville’s Valu-mart to do a check. There were complaints in November 2000 that some signs and cash receipts were in English-only. The language police returned May 9 to check the signs and receipts in the store to make sure they were in both languages.
Schumacher drafted to the pros: Bristol resident Kelly Schumacher recently was selected by the Indiana Fever of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) at the 2001 draft.
Schumacher was the 14th pick in the first round of the draft and will be playing in the upcoming season for the Indiana Fever. She first started playing basketball in Grade 7 at Pontiac High School in Shawville. In Grade 9 she went to a sports camp in Sherbrooke to improve her skills. After finishing high school she went to John Abbott College outside Montreal.
Schumacher won the Canadian College Athletic Association (CCAA) Player of the Year Award in 1997 while attending John Abbott College. It was at John Abbott College that Schumacher caught the attention of many prominent American colleges, including the University of Connecticut.
Schumacher played center with UConn and was a member of the National College Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 2000 national championship team in her senior year at the university. In the championship game she set a new NCAA record with nine blocks against the University of Tennessee and was declared MVP of the game.
Schumacher will be playing center for the Indiana Fever next season.
