The Way We Were:

Local news: Mr. Peter McLean, secretary of the Lower Litchfield school municipality, was in town on Tuesday, and informed us that no tenders have been received for the erection of the new school house in Litchfield, of which notice has been given in these columns.

Mr. George McDowell, agent, handed into this office a day or two ago an abnormally sized sample of hen fruit, which may be taken as evidence that although values in this kind of produce have depreciated materially the Great Canadian Cackler is in nowise discouraged.

In consequence of the extra rush of mill building this season, and the difficulty to procure expert mechanics to install his machinery, Mr. James Wilson of the Clarendon Roller Mill has been obliged to postpone the over-hauling of his mill until July.

Mrs. Robert Cuthbertson died at her residence, Clarendon, Que., on Wednesday, May 1st, in her eighty-first year. Deceased was a native of Paisley, Scotland, and came to Canada with her father’s family and settled in Bristol township. She leaves behind to mourn her loss, a husband to whom she had been married fifty-one years, two sons, David and Robert, still at home, four daughters, Mrs. Oscar Brooks, Mrs. H. Stewart, Mrs. D. McDougall and Mrs. W. Craig. The late Mrs. Cuthbertson was the last surviving member of her father’s family. She was long a member of the Presbyterian Church, and her death makes a break in the last old couple of her generation belonging to the Bristol congregation.

Clarendon district seems to be a veritable training place for young clergymen. We are very likely to lose Mr. Boyle, who has been offered a very important post in Montreal.

The schools reopened on Monday after the smallpox scare. The break will prove most detrimental to the progress of the pupils.
