The Way We Were:

Local News: Last Wednesday evening, the Shawville United Church choir went to Ottawa to compete in the Ottawa District Musical Festival. They were entered in the class for rural choirs and unfortunately there were no other entries in that class but they were awarded by the adjudicator the high mark of 82 per cent. They were also entered in the competition for all choirs outside Ottawa. In this group they were also awarded credit by default and were given the Board of Trade Trophy.

Fanned by the terrific high wind on Saturday, fire swept across the farms and bush lots of lower Litchfield causing great damage. So rapid did the flames spread that at first it seemed impossible to check it and had it not been for the great response to the fire alarm, the quick action and good work of the cores of men who with pails, shovels and axes, fought through dense smoke and amid burning embers, there is no telling what the result would have been.

All available manpower was put into action and with the aid of the Forest Protective Fire Equipment and that of the Hydro Commission, by Sunday noon the fire was well under control. No housing or buildings were damaged.

A short course on rug making was held at Pine Lodge last week under the auspices of the Bristol Busy Bees Women’s Institute.

The first two units of an overall order for 58 diesel units for the Canadian Pacific Railway’s Schreiber division, north of Lake Superior, were delivered from the Montreal Locomotive Works plant recently.
