Unexpected guests . . . It is reported that Melburn Hodgins on the Portage Road had 13 stay at his home Saturday night, on account of the storm.

March blizzard . . . What could be more pleasant than the gentle spring-like breezes which were the “order of the day” for March 3 of ‘51? We are quite sure many of the Charteris folk will forever be grateful to the inventor of the snow-mobile.

Grateful, for sure . . . Were the 16-odd residents of Charteris and thereabouts who got home from Shawville Saturday night via snow-mobile.

Shawville’s grand old lady: Mrs. James H. Riley, was “at home” last Friday to well over 100 visitors. The occasion was her 101st birthday and as the guests streamed in and out of her Centre Avenue home, eight birthday cakes received by Mrs. Riley sometimes vied with the centenarian for attention. Her recipe for living over the century mark is simple: “Hard work. Good clean living.”

In addition to the cakes, she received three telegrams from relatives unable to be on hand for the celebration and cards from Mrs. George Ebert in Vancouver and Rev. D. W. Noseworthy, Lynn, Mass.

Hurt in bush: Patrick Cunningham, of Campbell’s Bay, while working in the bush on Wednesday, was badly hurt by a falling tree, about 9:30 a.m. A tree had fallen, hitting a smaller tree, knocking the top off. This small tree top fell and hit Cunningham on the head. Alvin Hill and Pat’s brother, William were present. The three were working together at the time. The other two immediately took Pat to the Pontiac Community Hospital where he was treated by Dr. S. E. McDowell and Dr. Bruce Horner. He suffered a severe cut on his head and a slight fracture of the skull. His condition is reported as improving.
