The Way We Were:

Fire at Mickey Leach’s: A fire destroyed the home of the family of Mickey Leach near Quyon last week and might easily have caused the death of his wife and children, but for the fortunate arrival on the scene of Leonard Leach Jr. of Onslow.

Leonard and a friend were passing the Leach home when they noticed the chimney on fire. Leonard was able to rush in and rescue two young children and also to save valuable articles belonging to the family, such as the television set, baby furniture, piggy banks and the purses of the ladies who were dazed by the excitement and running around the house aimlessly, according to Leach.

Satisfied that the people were safely out of the house, Leonard had the presence of mind to find the phone and contact the operator to report the fire. Within minutes the Quyon fire truck was on the scene but was unable to save the dwelling.

Ditched!: Ron Sparling of Ontario may not have counted on the depth of the ditch on the shoulder of the Eardley Road when his large truck slid into the ditch on Saturday morning, the first day of March.

With spring right around the corner and a new road in the works, this all-too-frequent occurrence should become nothing but a bad memory before long.
