A little of this and that: Isn’t it the truth . . . It happened during a discussion in one of the Shawville High School classes, when the subject of roads arose. Up pipped a youngster with this: “If there’s a war Pontiac’s first and easiest line of defence will be No. 8 Highway. The foxholes are already made!”
Still on the go . . . Is the campaign to raise funds for a traffic signal at the intersection of Main and Centre Sts. But for the ‘flu George Tucker and Mayor Emerson Cotie would have been down to Ottawa to arrange for the lights and other essentials. There’s still time to contribute.
There’s a reason . . . For the oh so early milk delivery on Tuesday morning. Carl Dale went to the Morrisburg hockey game, returning to Shawville at 4.30 a.m. Deciding it wasn’t worthwhile trying to get some sleep he started out on the job.
Quebec W.I.: The Quebec Women’s Institutes have been conducting a survey as to the number of mentally deficient children in rural districts of this province and what measures, if any, are being taken to train them, many of whom have sufficient ability to become self-supporting and useful citizens. The findings, although far from complete, show that there are many mentally deficient in each county but no report tells of any facilities in the schools in the way of special classes to help them The Q.W.I. is hopeful the information gained through this survey may lead to some constructive action being taken along these lines.
Shawville Rotarians aid crippled: Shawville Rotary Club is in the midst of their campaign to raise funds to help crippled children and polio victims. A strong committee, led by George Eades and several other Rotary members, sent out on Thursday last 2,000 letters throughout the district. These letters contain an appeal in English and French for help. Also enclosed were 100 Easter seals, with a stamped addressed letter, and the recipients of the letters were asked to return the letter, enclosing $1 to pay for the seals. The treasurer is A. G. MacDougall, manager of the Bank of Montreal, Shawville, who reports that in the first four days since the seals were sent out, the receipts for the fund has been $175.
