The Way We Were:

A little of this and that: Spring or something . . . Whatever it was, Bill Thomson made a trip out West and arrived home sporting a brand new moustache.

Orchid of the week . . . To ourselves from Mrs. Jeff Keyes, of Picton, Ont., who sends along the good word that she enjoys THE EQUITY a lot and considers it like a letter from home.

Thought of the week . . . It is one of the most beautiful compensations of life that no man can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.

14 births here during February: During February, 14 births were recorded at the Pontiac Community Hospital. Following is the monthly report: Admissions, 88; operations, minor 18, major 5; births, male 9, female 5; daily average, 28.50.

W. D. McCleary Buried Tuesday: A lifelong citizen of the Township of Thorne, living at Ladysmith, and mayor of the township for 33 years, William Dupre McCleary, died at his home last Saturday morning, after an illness of over a year. He was in his 76th year.

Born at Ladysmith, he was the son of the late Samuel McCleary and Abigail Wilson. He was married 51 years ago to Miss Emma Hanna, who survives. He retired from farming 28 years ago and took the position of Ladysmith postmaster in 1925, holding it until two years ago.

In municipal life he was councillor of Thorne for three years, then mayor for the long term of 33 years. He was a member and for 30 years warden of the St. George’s Anglican Church. He was for many years president, then secretary, of the Thorne Farmers’ Club, and a director of the Pontiac Agricultural Society.

Surviving him are two sons, Wilson, of Ladysmith, and Harry, of Shawville; one daughter, Mrs. Sydney Sheppard, of Ladysmith, and one sister, Mrs. Herbert Strutt, of Shawville; four grand-children and two great-grandchildren, Judy and Brian Holt, of Ottawa.
