The Way We Were:

Rabies epidemic sweeps Pontiac County: Dr. Grant Rogers considers the rabies outbreak in Pontiac County to be quite bad, which, coming from this usually calm and unruffled veterinarian, could be interpreted as alarming.

The are affected, to his sure knowledge, stretches from about Coulonge to below Quyon and includes Calumet Island and up into Otter Lake.

The disease is spreading in the foxes and then through the farmlands as the foxes come into contact with dogs. One positive identification of rabies in cattle has been found, in a heifer owned by Lionel Telford of Campbell’s Bay and many are suspected.

One stray dog wandering through Shawville was discovered to be rabid. No owner could be found for this dog which had come into contact and in fact, bit some children, all of whom are now undergoing rabies vaccinations daily at the Pontiac Community Hospital.

A request has been made to the Health of Animals offices for rabies immunization clinics for pets be set up around Pontiac County.

Quebec Games silver medal winners: With a lot of hard skating on Feb. 2 in Masson, Mike Wilson and Nancy Peck were winners of silver medals.

Out of three races, Mike won a second and a third place finish to bring home a silver medal.

Out of six races, Nancy Peck won four firsts and two seconds to earn two silver medals.

Coached by Roy Peck, the finalists skated like pros to achieve honours for the Lower Gatineau Zone in the Quebec Games ‘75.
