Local news: The business men of the village of Campbells Bay have organized a Board of Trade. This reminds THE EQUITY that once upon a time Shawville organized a similar institution, but it seems to have fallen into a state of innocuous desuetude, or its deliberations are being conducted with the proverbial stealth of the seasoned detective. With our social and other activities now so well up to scratch, we want to see that board of trade get into the procession.
From February 25th, up to March 9th, about 20 inches of snow has fallen in this section, and in consequence sleighing is heavy. If the Spring break comes suddenly the demand for rubbers should be intensive.
Water Works By-Law: At the last regular meeting of the village Council, in pursuance of notice previously given, a by-law was passed, authorizing the Council to raise by way of debentures or bonds the sum of $35,000, said issue to run for a period of 35 years, and to bear interest at the rate of 5.5 p.c., payable half-yearly, and to provide for a sinking fund to extinguish the loan at the end of the period mentioned. The proposed loan is for the purpose of extinguishing the floating debt, of the corporation ($3,000) and for supplying the municipality with a water system ($32,000) – the source of such supply to be Shaw’s Lake, which has been tested to the satisfaction of the Council, as being of sufficient volume to meet the requirements of the village for many years to come.
Raising foxes: A letter recently received from Mr. E. W. McDowell, of Piapot, Sask., (formerly a Shawville resident) states that he has 12 pairs of silver-black foxes—all registered in the Canadian Live Stock Records at Ottawa, and that “they are the smartest kind of live stock he has handled so far. We shall not attempt to question this statement.
Farmers club banquet: The 25th anniversary of the formation of the Clarendon Farmers’ Club was fittingly celebrated at No. 5 School, Clarendon, on March 5th. The committee and members of the Club, co-operating with the Clarendon Women’s Institute arranged and carried out a very successful banquet. About 100 persons were present, including charter and other members of the Club and their families; representatives of the Clarendon Women’s Institute and the Agricultural Society, etc.
