The Way We Were:

Pontiac County mayors ask Department of Social Affairs to not close down Mosgrove’s: Following a presentation to County Council Monday by Mr. Larry Mosgrove regarding the threats to close down his boarding house near Shawville, the Mayors voted unanimously to contact Quebec and request that this essential service to the community be permitted to remain.

In discussing the matter, it was pointed out that a recent request had been made to the Manor in Campbell’s Bay to receive all the people living at Mosgrove’s boarding house because, according to the social worker at that time, Mosgrove’s was going to be closed immediately!

This sort of threat has been hanging over the Mosgroves for several months and only went to show how far out of touch the officials of the various social departments are with reality. The Manor at Campbell’s Bay is full to capacity and has a long waiting list.

Another incident was when the Pontiac Social Planning Council tried to get permission from Quebec to use the empty St Joseph’s Convent to accommodate elderly people who need shelter and care now. They were told that the “fifty bed old folks home in Shawville was sufficient for all the local needs”. (The rest of the world knows, of course, that there is no old folks home in Shawville.)

A resolution was then made to request that the Department of Social Affairs should do something positive soon about the plight of the over 70 known handicapped and chronic people in Pontiac who need a place to live, and in the meantime should not proceed with its stated intent to close down the boarding house in Clarendon where Mr. and Mrs. Mosgrove care for a number of these cases.

High School students touring Italy and France: Students from the Victoria Avenue School in Shawville and St Alphonsus School in Chapeau left on Saturday, February 28th, for a thirteen day tour of Europe. They will be home on Thursday, March 11. They left from Mirabel Airport by Boing 747 arriving at Rome International Airport and the itinerary included the Vatican, Florence, Sorrento, Naples, Milan, Padua, Pompei, Capri, Pisa and Venice as well as Paris and Versailles in France.
