The Way We Were:

New lease on life for the Hilton Mines: “Where there’s life there’s hope,” says Hugh Manuell, local manager of the Hilton Mines at Bristol, by which he means that as long as the plant is operating and the nucleus of the work force can be maintained in place there is hope for future operation.

This happy frame of mind was brought on by the decision last week by Pickands Mather to continue operation of the mine here until at least the spring of 1977.

The plan is to recover some of the ore that has been tied up in the road system in the pit as well as at the pumping station and other places on the mine site. The engineering feat is not going to be easy but feasibility studies have been carried out and it has been considered worth trying.

A start on the new ore bodies will be made as soon as the present reserve is finished which will probably be early this fall.

Mr. Manuell said that there will be fewer employees on the new project than the 335 who are at present needed and the ore will be the same grade as is now being processed in the mill and the pelletizer.

Police news: The Police have decided to crack down on those drivers who enjoy squealing their brakes in Shawville all night and almost every night. There will be special patrols of this village and Sergeant Nadeau expects that arrests will be made.

Bicycle thefts have become popular and although the police were successful in solving one, there are others which have not as yet been solved.

A green Mustang CCM was stolen from Brent Barr’s home on June 2nd, in Shawville, and at Campbell’s Bay Eric Belanger’s children had two bicycles stolen from the roadside while they were fishing near the Hayes Road. One was a CCM Mustang and the other was a 76 Supercycle 10 speed. Their value was set at $200. While trying to locate these stolen bicycles the police would like to warn people not to leave their valuable bicycles on the roadsides or unattended in public because bicycle thieves are on the prowl.

The one stolen bike which has been recovered, and the culprits discovered, was the Victor 1075 10 speed white bike valued at $108 belonging to Kim Foran of Bristol. The two suspects are juvenile so will remain anonymous.

Smart honoured by Rotary Club: A historic event took place at the annual Rotary Club charter day dinner dance last week. Orval Smart, the only surviving member from thirty years ago, was given the distinctive honour of being named a Paul Harris Sustaining Member by Rotary International. This was done as the result of a unanimous vote by club members who will financially support the Rotary Foundation from year to year on Orval’s behalf.

Mr. Dave Mackenzie, the Shawville Rotary Club president, presented the award to a surprised Orval who was not aware he had been selected by his fellow club members as a recipient of this signal honour.
