The Way We Were:

Local news: The annual Dominion Day picnic is to be held again this year at the Calumet Slides, Bryson. So successful did the Portage parishioners make the last picnic at Bryson that it is quite likely many from far and near will go again this year to celebrate the day there.

The Academy pupils enjoyed a glorious day’s outing on Saturday, the seniors visiting the slides at Bryson, and the little folk holding a picnic at Green Lake.

Messrs. Smart and Smith, agents, are offering a handsome trophy cup for a bicycle contest to be held some time during the present summer months.

Mr. J.A. Mousseau, son of the late Judge Mousseau, a former premier of this province, is a recent addition to the legal fraternity of Bryson.

Mr. W. McCoshen and Mr. Pigott, electrician, were in town last week, making some changes and repairs in the telephone system here.

Mr. Norman McCuaig of Bryson, Inspector for this district of fires, forests, fish and game laws, was at the Otter Lake House Monday and Tuesday accompanied by Mr. B. Rainville, advocate.

Several letters have been received here form Canadian soldiers in South Africa. The fearful reduction in the numbers of the contingents is the most important feature noted. Capt. Maynard Rogers of Ottawa states that great havoc is being caused by disease in the ranks of Canadians.

It is reported that the lead mines on Chats Island near Arnprior, which have been idle some years, are shortly to be sold.

Princess Aribert of Anhalt, granddaughter of the Queen, is at present visiting in Canada.
