Almost $2,100 raised in fifty-mile bikeathon: Last Saturday about seventy five cyclists participated in the bikeathon and pedalled from Shawville to Otter Lake and back thus raising $2084.37 for the summer recreation program for children of Shawville and district.
Most participants had left before nine o’clock, benefitting from the ideal morning weather. Good spirit and enthusiasm was evident as 54 of the participants were able to complete the round trip. Most of those who stopped short of the finish line did so on account of ailing bicycles.
Julie Armstrong and Jennifer Kearnan were the youngest bikers of the day but eight-year-old Michael Hodgins won the award as youngest to finish the 50 miles. Ronnie Campbell, at the advanced age of 35, was the oldest finisher and also had pledges for $5.78 per mile so became the most financially successful participant as well, assuring about $289 for the fund if all his sponsors follow through on their promises.
Blaine Angus was the fastest cyclist with a time of 3 hrs, 16 minutes and Glenn Clarke had a time of one minute more, 3 hrs, 17 minutes. Mark Alexander was fastest in the junior section with 3 hrs, 30 minutes.
Mosgrove charged under social services law: At last week’s meeting of the Pontiac County Social Planning Council a resolution was passed to ask the Department of Social Affairs in Quebec to accept favourably the application for permit to operate an establishment to Larry Mosgrove of Shawville.
This week Larry Mosgrove has received a summons to appear in court at ten o’clock, June 30th, in Campbell’s Bay to answer charges of having operated his “establishment” from December, 1975 to March 1976, without a permit. One section (96) of the law states that “The Minister shall issue the permit if he deems it in the public interest to do so.”
The charge against Larry Mosgrove was brought by the “Procureur General de la Province de Québec” represented by Donald Lavallée.
