Local news: While Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Grant, of Morehead section, were out milking early Monday morning, their home caught fire and the flames soon enveloped the building, rendering it impossible to do anything except remove as many of the contents as they could within a few minutes time.
Following the resignation of Mr. J. G. Elliott, as Mayor of Shawville, in consequence of his removal to Ottawa, the Council appointed Mr. D. Campbell as his successor, but Mr. Campbell declined to act as Mayor, but signified his willingness to act as Councillor, if one of the board would condescend to step up into the Mayor’s chair. This plan was carried out by the appointment of Mr. J. M. Argue to the Mayoralty, and Mr. Campbell taking his place on the Council board.
Two young men named Morrissey and O’Rielly of North Onslow neighborhood, were drowned Friday night, while on a fishing expedition to Hayes’ Lake, which lies not a great distance from their homes. Not returning when expected by their relatives, a search was instituted, when evidences of their fate was discovered on the shore of the lake. Continued search revealed the bodies of the unfortunate youths lying in five feet of water. These few sad facts were all that came to the knowledge of THE EQUITY before going to press.
“The Three Pegs,” a play presented by a company of Campbells Bay ladies at the Theatre on Friday evening, was very highly appreciated by the comparatively small audience who attended. It was unfortunate, as well as discouraging to the performers that their very efficient efforts met with such a cold response on the part of the public—especially in view of the worthy object in behalf of which the entertainment was given. The play was in every respect a distinct improvement on the average amateur performance, and reflected the utmost credit upon those who took part. The slim attendance at this particularly noteworthy function suggests the question:—Are the citizens of Shawville and vicinity being “entertained” out of proportion to the financial capabilities of the place?
