The Way We Were:

Local News: Shawville is now fairly well equipped with firefighting appliance, having in addition to the chemical and hand engines, recently purchased a second-hand steamer, in good order; a ladder truck, also 500 feet of new hose. All now needed is a water supply and this is assured at Shaw’s Lake, if the ratepayers approve of the scheme of tapping that source.

Mr. and Mrs. F.C. Smyth and family motoring from Gore Bay, Ont. to Shawville last week, met with a mishap on the way at a point somewhat distant from any habitation and Mrs. Smyth and children had to proceed on to Renfrew by train, leaving F.C. and his little son Ken to grapple with and overcome the car trouble before they could continue the journey.

The lighting contracts submitted to the citizens of Shawville by the Ottawa River Power Co. are not being received with anything like general approval, so far as we can learn.

From Mr. J.J. O’Donnell, Mayor of North Onslow, who was in town on Monday, THE EQUITY learned of a horrible occurrence in North Onslow on Thursday last. The victim was a boy about 16 years of age, whose name Mr. O’Donnell could not recall.

It appears the boy was sent to the home of another farmer some distance off and as he did not return home when expected, two younger members of the family, a boy and girl, were sent to find out what had happened. Along the way on a path through a patch of bush, they suddenly came upon a bear in the act of devouring their brother’s body. Terribly alarmed and shocked, they hastened back home and informed their father, who immediately set out, armed with a gun for the scene of the tragedy. He arrived on the scene but before the man could get a shot at the animal, it escaped into a swamp. The unfortunate youth was interred on Saturday.

The Orange celebration at Campbell’s Bay, briefly referred to in last issue, is reported to have been one of the most successful events of that nature held in the county for many years, if number counts as the chief factor.

William Bryant, 61, a hermit farmer of the Stanley district, was found dead on his farm Sunday, believed to be the victim of the extreme heat. He lived in a two-room shack in which authorities found $35,000 in bonds and other securities. His only known brother, lives at Quyon, Que. For many years, Mr. Bryant was an active farmer and prospector in the Stanley district.
