Royal Soucy jogs to Ottawa on Canada Day: Sixteen-year-old Royal Soucy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gilles Soucy of Shawville, decided to run down the highway to Ottawa, a distance of fifty miles, on July 1.
He set forth at three o’clock in the morning to avoid too much sun and by 7:45 he was well below Luskville when
THE EQUITY caught up with him for a picture.
The plan was to arrive at the Champlain Bridge by two in the afternoon. Royal, who will be entering grade eleven at Pontiac Protestant High School in September, had to forego membership in the school cross-country running team this year in order to concentrate on his studies and has been training for this particular jaunt for the past two weeks.
His longest run before the Ottawa trip has been 20 miles. Steve Jodoin, son of Mrs. Shirley Jodoin also of Shawville, also started out with Royal but twisted his ankle and had to hitch-hike home.
Royal arrived at Ottawa more than two hours ahead of schedule, at 11:40 a.m.
20th anniversary Zion Hospital Auxiliary: The Zion Hospital Auxiliary held an anniversary banquet to celebrate their 20th year in operation. All members who had ever belonged in the auxiliary were invited. There were approximately 79 members attending including their husbands and friends.
Mrs. Marks asked the blessing. President Barbara Cruickshank welcomed everyone.
Mrs. Earl Fulford who was one of the first to promote the idea of forming an auxiliary in Zion read a lengthy report of the activities of the auxiliary over the past twenty years.
The evening was very much enjoyed by all.
