A public meeting of the electors of the township of Clarendon and village of Shawville was held in Hynes Hall, Shawville for the purpose of nominating five school commissioners for the newly formed school municipality of Clarendon.

Lumber companies who use the waters of the Ottawa River for logging purposes are declaring war on log pilferers in an effort to check increasing loss in this manner, which yearly runs into a considerable amount of money.

The first stage of hostilities opened in the Ottawa Police Court yesterday afternoon, when four men appeared before Magistrate Joynt on charges of log stealing, one of who pleaded guilty and was sentenced to serve six months hard labour.
In all cases where theft of logs was charged, the method of theft and discovery was the same. Logs being taken from the river, all identification marks removed by either saw or axe; cut up into quarter lengths and split and piled on the premises of accused, in some cases for sale.

The J.R. Booth and other companies promise numerous future prosecutions. Previously, anyone caught in the act was allowed to go with a warning, but in future they will be brought to court, first offenders or not.
