The Way We Were:

Local news: Hon. Mr. Duffy, Commissioner of Public Works, Quebec, passed up through here by train to Coulonge on Monday in company with Hon. George Bryson. He visited the government buildings at Bryson on Tuesday.

The good people of Dunraven (Calumet Island) section, postponed their annual picnic this year on account of the picnic at the Slides til the following day; then rain interfered and they were obliged to hold it over still another day when the weather turned out favourable. A very large crowd from all parts assembled at Moore’s grove and enjoyed the day in dancing, etc. The eatables were supplied by the Messrs. Cahill who filled the bill very satisfactorily.

Mr. Edmonds, head miller for the McLaren Company at Wakefield and Mr. Charlesworth of the Pembroke Milling Company, have been here inspecting the Shawville Roller Mill, with a view to making comparisons between the system used here; known as the gyrating process, and that of other mills they had been to; the main object being to secure information as to the merits of each. Both gentlemen left with the impression that the Shawville plant was the most up-to-date and complete that they had seen.

Mr. Jason P. Masson, who has been running a store in Otter Lake for Messrs. McGinn and Abbott of Kazabazua, has closed up business for a couple of months during the time the farmers are busy.

With an immense number of new attractions for the upcoming Central Canada Exhibition, this year cannot fail to be a greater success than ever before. One of the grandest attractions will be the spectacular at night, the battle of Paardeberg in which so many of our gallant Canadian soldier boys in South Africa laid down their lives for their country and their Queen.
